On the evening of November 9, 1938, in an event that portended the Holocaust,
the Nazi-led German government orchestrated an attack against German Jews that
included the destruction of Jewish synagogues, cemeteries and businesses. That
infamous night is known as Kristallnacht, or "Crystal Night" --so named for the
broken glass that littered the streets in the wake of the attack. Ninety-one
people were murdered that night and many more -- estimates place the
number as high as 2,000 to 2,500 people -- died as a result of the Kristallnacht
arrests that led to incarceration in concentration camps.
Eisch, a glass sculptor from the village of Frauenau in the German state of Bavaria, was 12 years old at the time. He created his “Kristallnacht” portfolio in 1992 in response to the event. "I want to try to come to terms with the burden, the shame, the anger and the fear which shaped my childhood,” Eisch wrote in the “Kristallnacht” preface.
