HUGH MERRILL b. Maryland 1949; resides in St. Louis, Missouri
Hugh Merrill was awarded his undergraduate degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a Master of Fine Art from Yale University. He became a faculty member of the Kansas City Art Institute in 1976 and is a tenured professor there.
Merrill is noted as a printmaker for his series of sequential etchings. He has produced prints based on historical/social themes such as the 'Raoul Wallenberg Suite," "The Rosa Luxemburg Suite" and the suite "Do Unto." Merrill began an ongoing sequential series of etchings titled "Infinite Image/Facts of Fictions" in 1995. This series is meant to continue for decades, documenting his images and ideas over a lifetime.
The artist's interest in collaboration with a non-arts audience has lead to his working with young people, mostly from the inner city, to create collaborative/communal art works. Merrill developed and implemented a series of community art/printmaking projects with inner city youth, special needs children and rural communities to create artworks that memorialize the everyday experiences of living.
In 2009 a retrospective, “Divergent Consistencies: The Studio and Community Art of Hugh Merrill, 1969-2009,” was mounted at Leedy-Voulkos Art Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
Among Merrill's many honors are four Mellon Grants. His work has been collected by the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Minneapolis Art Institute, Nelson-Atkins Museum, Kansas City; San Antonio Art Institute, Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and Yale Museum of Fine Arts in New Haven, Connecticut.
