PETER LOEWER resides in North Carolina
Peter Loewer is a well known author and botanical illustrator of over thirty books on gardening, native plants and wildflowers. He began his career studying the graphic arts with Gene Vass at the Albright School in Buffalo New York. After graduation, he entered the Brooklyn Museum School on a Max Beckmann Fellowship. There his study of painting with Reuben Tam ended abruptly when he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1959.
After discharge he founded a studio in Manhattan devoted to scientific and botanical illustration. He worked in that field until the mid-1970s when he began writing and illustrating books on natural history and gardening. His second book, Bringing the Outdoors In, contained many intricate pen and ink drawings of various plants. It was named the best gardening book of 1974 by House Beautiful. In 1989 his self-produced book for Rodale Press, Gardens by Design, was given the award for the best-designed and illustrated book at the Philadelphia Print Show.
In 1991 The Wild Gardener: On Flowers and Foliage for the Natural Border was published by Stackpole Books. It included fifty line drawings and was selected by the American Horticultural Society as one of the top seventy-five gardening books produced in the twentieth century.
Loewer's pen and ink botanical drawings are included in the permanent collection of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is the host of the radio program The Wild Gardener on WCQS Public Radio in Asheville, North Carolina.
Botanical Wanderings Suite
In 2003 Peter Loewer visited Littleton Studios in Spruce Pine, North Carolina to create a portfolio of ten prints titled Botanical Wanderings. Included in the portfolio are a title page, colophon and artist's preface. Published in an edition of thirty, the prints are executed in a combination of vitreographic intaglio and waterless lithography (siligraphy). The images measure 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches and the sheet size is 13 1/4 x 10 1/4 inches. The prints are matted and come in an attractive clothbound clamshell for $2,000. Artists proofs of individual images are available for $250 each.

In his preface to Botanical Wanderings, Peter Loewer wrote:
"On Earth, we are surrounded by plants: Their seeds furnish food, their leaves cleanse and replenish our atmosphere, their blossoms provide clothing, their roots and bark contain medicines to cure our ills, and in parts of the world, plants still serve as weapons. Our parks and gardens revel in plants from thrusting trees to walkways lined with shrubs and bushes -- some in bloom and some just deep shadows of green.

"We walk through great patterned quilts of vibrant blossoms or amble past quiet pools of color, meant to soothe the eye and calm the soul. In the bright world of full sun, flowers and leaves can be small, so small they're overlooked, passed by with but a moment's notice. Or they can be large enough to silently threaten and we walk faster, not quite sure why -- but we do.

"By night a forest or a garden can be a dark or threatening place, those holes of black becoming endless caves full of imaginable horrors. Add the light of our ancient moon and we witness the thin line that divides beauty and soft murmurings of wind from fear and trembling. The images in this portfolio are meant to reflect the mysterious ways of plants, from strangely beautiful flowers to those that lie just to the left of our conscious minds."
