DAVID DODGE LEWIS b. 1951 Houlton, Maine; resides in Virginia
David Dodge Lewis is the William W. Elliott Professor of Fine Arts at Hampton Sydney College in Virginia. He received his formal art education at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina where he was awarded both a Master of Arts (1980-81) and Master of Fine Arts (1984-1987) in painting. Prior to this he received a Bachelor of Science in Art Education (summa cum laude) from The University of Southern Maine in Portland.
At Littleton Studios, David Dodge Lewis was the first artist to use sandblasting as a way to fix a printable image on a glass plate. Sandblasting produces minute ink-holding pits in the surface of the glass. Inked in the same manner as an aquatint, the sandblasted plate can yield a variety of tones.
Lewis's work is in the permanent collections of the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, North Carolina; Corning Museum of Glass, New York; Longwood Center for the Visual Arts, Farmville, Virginia; East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina and College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor, Maine, among others.
