RICHARD JOLLEY b. Wichita, Kansas 1952; resides in Knoxville, Tennessee
Richard Jolley moved from his Kansas birthplace to eastern Tennessee at the age of four. He attended Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tennessee and in 1974 received the Bachelor of Fine Arts from George Peabody College, Vanderbilt University in Nashville. During the summer of 1974 Jolley did graduate study at Penland School of Craft in North Carolina. In subsequent years he returned to Penland to teach workshops.
Best known for his glass sculptures, Jolley is a versatile artist who works in several techniques, including sculpture in bronze, painting, drawing and printmaking. His work takes its themes from the human figure. There is a classical formality to his idealized figures of men and women that Jolley combines with vibrant color, active pattern and bold composition. His style is unique and readily recognizable to followers of contemporary art.
The artist's first retrospective, "Richard Jolley: Sculptor of Glass" was on exhibit at the Knoxville Museum of Art from December 2002 through May 2003. His work is in a number of public collections, including the Museum of Arts & Design, New York City; Corning Museum of Glass, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. Overseas his work is in the collections of Coburg Museum, Germany; Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, Sapporo, Japan; International Glasmuseum, Ebeltoft, Denmark and Kunstmuseum, Düsseldorf, Germany.
