WARRINGTON COLESCOTT

b. 1921, New Orleans, Louisiana; resides in Wisconsin

Born in New Orleans, Warrington Colescott was raised in California and attended high school in Oakland. He studied art at the University of California in Berkeley, where he made cartoons for the university's student newspaper, The Daily Cal and its humor magazine, The Pelican. This experience provided fertile ground for Colescott's nascent interest in political satire.  After graduation in 1942 and a four year stint in the U.S. Army he returned to Berkeley as a graduate student in painting.  He taught himself serigraphy and was exhibiting on the West Coast when he took a teaching position at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1949. Colescott's academic career has been a distinguished one.  He was made a full professor at the University of Wisconsin in 1956 and became Chair of the Department of Art in 1958, a position he held until 1961. In 1979 he was appointed the Leo Steppat  Professor of Art and in 1986 was named Professor Emeritus.

Among Colescott's numerous awards were a Fulbright Fellowship to England (1957), a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship (1965), four National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships (1975, '79, '83 and '93)  and a Wisconsin Governor's Award in the Arts (1976). His prints and paintings have been in many solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, and in Colombia and Peru in South America. In Europe his work has appeared in exhibitions in England, France, Germany, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Poland and in Asia in India, Japan, Korea, Taipei, and the People's Republic of China.

Colescott's work has been collected by, among others, the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; Art Institute of Chicago; Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC;  and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City.
